The ant ivirus soft ware's scanning engine scans all files and file act ivit y
(opening/closing files, et c.) for known viruses. Any detect ed virus will be blocked from
t aking any act ion and will t hen be cleaned or quarantined. Most  ant ivirus soft ware also
uses heuristic scanning, where files are scanned for t ypical virus charact erist ics, so
called viral signat ures. This means t hat  t he antivirus scanner can detect  a new,
unknown virus, if t he new virus cont ains some t ypical charact erist ics of existing
viruses.

Where just  a single t echnology might  fall short  of detect ing or ident ifying a virus, 
Anti-Virus  combines several t echnologies t o ensure t hat  your computer is prot ect ed
from viruses:

 Scanning - searching for charact er st rings t hat  are charact erist ic of a given

virus

 Heurist ic analysis - dynamic emulat ion of t he scanned object ’s inst ruct ions in a

virt ual computer environment

 Generic det ect ion - det ect ion of inst ruct ions charact erist ic of t he given

virus/group of viruses

AVG is also able t o analyze and detect  execut able applications or DLL libraries t hat
could be potentially unwanted within t he system. We call such t hreat s Potent ially
Unwant ed Programs (various kinds of spyware, adware etc.). Furt hermore, AVG scans
your syst em registry for suspicious ent ries, t emporary Internet files and t racking
cookies, and allows you t o t reat all pot ent ially harmful it ems in t he same way as any
other infect ion.
