Spyware is usually defined as a t ype of malware, i.e. soft ware, t hat  gat hers
information from a user's comput er wit hout  t he user's knowledge or consent . Some
spyware applicat ions may also be installed on purpose and oft en cont ain
advertisements, window pop-ups or different  t ypes of unpleasant soft ware. 

Current ly, t he most  common source of infect ion is websites with pot ent ially dangerous
content . Ot her met hods of t ransmission, such as via e-mail or t ransmission by worms
and viruses are also prevalent. The most  important prot ect ion is t o use an always-on
background scanner, Anti-Spyware , t hat  works like a resident  shield and scans your
applicat ions in t he background as you run t hem.
