Attach a single local
device to, or multiplex
two devices onto, a
packet-switched WAN
such as X.25 or Frame
Relay.
Available in versions
with RS-232, RS-530,
V.35, or X.21 main-link
ports, as well as
versions with a DDS
WAN port.
Aggregate sync data
rates (total for all sync
ports) up to 2 Mbps,
per-port async rates
up to 115.2 kbps.
Control and configure
it from a terminal for
almost any packet-
switching application.
Firmware is flash-
upgradable.
Rackmountable.
M
aybe you’re thinking about
moving to packet-switched
technology to get your data across
the country or around the world—
straight Frame Relay or X.25,
perhaps, or HDLC or IP/SLIP over
one or the other. But where can
you find an access device that’s
versatile yet economical enough
for your application? Try the Frame
Relay Access Device Switch-3 A/S
(Fradswitch-3 A/S), 3-Port.
Even though we call it a
“fradswitch,” it doesn’t switch
WAN access, it multiplexes it.
You can attach local devices to
two of its three main-link ports,
then hook the third port into the
packet-switched network either
directly (with “-DDS” models) or
indirectly through a CSU/DSU,
modem, etc. (with other models).
What kind of interfaces do
your local devices have? We
offer models with different main-
link port serial interfaces (RS-232,
RS-530, V.35, or X.21). The “-DDS”
models even have a built-in
CSU/DSU and an RJ-48 DDS
WAN port.
The main-link ports that you
configure as synchronous can
Link two devices with others
across a packet-switched
network—almost any two
devices, almost any packet-
switched protocol!
Key Features
FRAME RELAY ACCESS SWITCH-3 A/S, 3-PORT
send and receive data at a total
aggregate data rate of 2 Mbps.
What this means is, when you
add up the data rates of the sync
main-link ports on the Fradswitch-
3 A/S, they can total as much as
2 Mbps. Any main-link port you
configure as async can transmit
data at up to 115.2 kbps.
The Fradswitch-3 A/S, 3-Port
does have a few internal jumpers,
notably jumper banks that you
can use to determine whether
the main-link ports are DTE or
DCE. However, its main controls—
the ones you can use to control,
monitor, and troubleshoot the unit,
not to mention configure it for
an amazing variety of packet-
switching applications—are
embedded in its powerful
firmware. Just attach a terminal
or terminal-emulating PC to its
control port in order to access
the unit’s powerful menu system.
Once installed and configured,
the Fradswitch-3 A/S, 3-Port
usually operates unattended. After
initial setup, operator intervention
is typically only required when the
switch has to be reconfigured.
The switch stores its
configuration in nonvolatile RAM
(NVRAM), so it won’t lose its
configuration if it loses power.
And you can flash-upgrade the
firmware as new versions become
available.
Monitor activity by glancing at
the front-panel indicators. During
normal operation, the switch’s
PWR and SYNC LEDs continuously
light. Channel- and link-activity
LEDs flash according to the traffic
load and darken when the
respective channels are idle.
You also get a Packet
Switching Guide with the switch.
It has system-configuration and
troubleshooting information
(including testing and diagnostics
instructions).
Delivered completely
assembled, the Fradswitch-3 A/S,
3-Port can be installed as a
desktop unit or mounted in a 19"
rack—it takes up just 1U (1.75",
4.4 cm) of vertical space. To install
it in a rack, order the Rackmount
Kit (LRRACK), which includes
brackets and hardware for the
two front holes on the switch’s
side.
