Use the 
SHUTTER SOUND item in the setup menu to choose the sound made by the shutter.

In situations in which camera sounds or lights may be unwelcome, press the 
DISP/BACK button for a second, or select ON for

 SILENT MODE in the setup 
menu (

 80; note that silent mode is not available during movie playback).  The 
camera speaker, fl ash, and AF-assist illuminator/self-timer lamp turn off  and 
fl ash and volume settings can not be adjusted.
