Warning
Blank f aceplates and cover panels serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to
hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they cont ain electromagnetic int erference (EMI )
that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not
operate the system unless all cards, facepl ates, front covers, and rear covers are in place. Statement

Warning
Vol tages that present a shock hazard may exist on Power over Ethernet (PoE) ci rcuits if
interconnections are made using uni nsulated exposed metal contacts, conductors, or terminals.
Avoid using such interconnection methods, unless the exposed metal parts are located wit hin a
restricted access location and users and service peopl e who are authorized within the restricted
access location are made aware of the hazard. A restricted access area can be accessed only through
the use of a special tool, lock and key or other means of security. Statement 1072

Caution
To prevent ESD damag e, handle switch in g modules by th e carrier edges only.
To install a switching mo dule in a Catalyst 4900M series switch, p erfo rm the following steps:
Step 1
Take th e necessary precautions to prevent ESD damag e as describ ed in Ap pen dix B and in Chapter 2.
Step 2
Choose a slot fo r the n ew switchin g mo dule. En sure that yo u h ave enou gh clearance to accommodate
any in terface eq uipment th at you will connect d irectly to the switching modu le ports.

Step 4
Remove the switching-module filler plate (or the existing switch in g module). Save the s witching-module
filler plate for fu ture use. If you are removing an existing switch ing module, see th e
