In today’s Enterprise-grade wireless LANs, access
points are no longer autonomous. They depend
on WLAN controllers for security and session
control information. Hence, since there may be
upward of 100 access points on a single con-
troller, WLAN controller failure can potentially
impact many hundreds if not thousands of users
and devices. As a result, reliability has always
been a key requirement for wireless LANs.

Trapeze Networks MSS provides as standard, full
support for N:1 controller redundancy in a hot-
standby mode, as well as various access point
resiliency options including RF auto tuning and
access point multi-homing.

But, as wireless LANs become the de facto
access layer to the corporate network, sup-
porting voice services and other mission criti-
cal applications, many organizations require a
higher level of availability, and the convenience
of easier redundancy configuration in large

High Availability Module
To meet the demand for pervasive mission
critical wireless LANs, Trapeze Networks has
enhanced its highly distributed Smart Mobile
architecture with an entirely new class of reli-
ability. The capabilities embodied in the High
Availability Module deliver nonstop wireless
availability with hitless failover, and dramatic
improvements in the configuration and man-
agement of redundancy configurations.

Virtual Controller Cluster
Building upon the highly distributed Smart
Mobile architecture that enables seamless roam-
ing between controllers, Trapeze has applied
the principals of clustering and virtualization to
wireless LANs.

The Virtual Controller Cluster approach treats
all WLAN controllers as a pool of resources that
is available to all the access points in the net-
work. This eliminates the traditional one-to-one
mapping between access point and controller,
and the associated management overhead of
configuring one controller at a time. Plus it adds
plug-and-play flexibility for scaling network
capacity and implementing adds moves and
changes. And finally, it delivers unprecedented
session-level reliability.

Cluster Configuration
Clustering changes the way the entire WLAN
system is configured. All services such as VLANs,
SSIDs, ACLs, radio profiles even AAA are config-
ured together at the network level, rather than
at an individual controller level. In fact almost
everything except device level details such as IP
address and port assignments is removed from
the individual controller configuration.

This reduces the task of configuring the network
by up to 80% over the traditional one-by-one
