7.3  About RAID Global and Hot Spares
A hot spare is a drive that is on standby in case
another drive fails. Depending on how the
array is configured, the drive is either picked up
automatically and the array is rebuilt, or you
manually select the drive (or insert a new drive
in the same slot as the failed drive) and rebuild
the array.
How the hot spare works depends on how the
array is configured. When a drive fails, the
array rebuilds automatically using the hot
spare. This is assuming that automatic rebuild
is enabled. If automatic rebuild is disabled, you
must manually start the rebuild process.
During a rebuild you may notice degraded
performance on the drives.

7.4  Global and Dedicated Hot Spares
A dedicated hot spare is assigned to one or
more arrays, whereas a global hot spare can
be used for any array that is on the same
controller as the hot spare. Also, dedicated hot
spares that reside in the same storage
enclosure typically have better performance

than
global hot spares.
