Since networked printing typically accounts for more than half of all network activity, routing all 
printing jobs through a general file server may not be economical or efficient.  Too many 
printing jobs can overwhelm a file server and cause the entire network to slow down.  Assigning 
a dedicated PC could ease the burden on the file server; however, this is a costly solution 
because it requires the purchase of additional hardware and software and can be complex to set 
up.  A print server is a cost-effective, dedicated server that connects and manages one or more 
printers in a network.  It enables network users to print independently of the file server or a 
dedicated PC.  
 
Print servers can be internal or external. An external print server is more flexible since the same 

print server can be used even as printers are changed or upgraded.
