Using the backlight while on battery power substantially reduces battery life.  
You can check the battery status by selecting Start | Settings | System tab | Power. On this 
screen, the timeout for turning off the device if not used for 3 minutes (default value) while on 
battery power, can be adjusted. The factory default setting for this parameter is Enabled.
