GLOSSARY
EBCDIC
Extended Binary-Coded Decimal Interchange Code—A digital
coding system used to represent characters electronically, each
character being represented by eight bits.
escape character (ESC)
A control code, or control character, represented by ASCII 27
(1BH), which must be placed in front of a printer command. The
escape character tells the printer to execute the following
character string rather than print it. It is represented by the icon
E
.
escape sequence
A sequence of characters beginning with an escape code and
comprising a printer command.
fixed spacing
Arrangement of characters on a line so that all characters occupy
the same amount of horizontal space.
fuser
Printer component that permanently affixes toner to paper
through application of heat.
fuser jam
Occurs when any sheet is late in arriving at the post feed-out roll
sensor, either 2-sided or 1-sided.
grain
On a sheet of paper, the direction in which most of the fibres
run.  In long grain paper, the fibres run parallel to the long side;
while in short grain paper, the fibres run parallel to the short
side.

Refers to the decomposed bit map that will be directed through
the ROS onto a page.
interface
The connection between two devices.  Interfaces are meant to
carry electronic impulses from one place to another.  Hardware
interfaces, for instance, link a host computer to a printer.  It is a
common boundary between systems or parts of systems.  Often
refers to electronic device that enables one kind of equipment to
communicate with or control another.
job
A print operation.  A job delimited by job control (JC), end of
job (EOJ), or JC suspension of host communications.
