Discontinuation of P Image for Cisco CRS in Cisco
IOS XR Software Release 4.2.0 and Later

Support for P and PX images was introduced in Release 4.0.0 of Cisco IOS

Software for Cisco

Carrier Routing System (CRS). For example, Release 4.0.0

supports both XC-RP-P-04.00 and XC-RP-PX-04.00 images. PX is a superset of P
image and is required to support Cisco CRS-3 hardware and Performance Route
Processors (PRPs). This product bulletin gives notice that starting with Cisco IOS XR
Release 4.2.0, the Cisco CRS will support only the PX image. Table 1 depicts the P
and PX support matrix for Cisco IOS XR Software.

Upgrade Paths

To upgrade to Cisco IOS XR Release 4.2.0, customers must either upgrade their route processor (RP) flash disks

to 4GB or migrate to PRPs. Cisco recommends the PRP migration option.

The Cisco CRS Performance Route Processors are the next-generation route processors for the CRS-1 and CRS-

3 platforms. PRPs are equipped with 6 GB or 12 GB of fast double data rate 3 (DDR3) error correction code (ECC)

memory and offer extremely fast routing performance at exceptional scale for large core and edge applications.

PRPs also include a pair of Solid State Drives (SSDs) for fast software installation and bootup. Like the ECC

memory, which protects against memory errors, the dual SSDs guard against drive failure by mirroring the boot

partition that stores the Cisco IOS-XR Software.
