FHRP – HSRP BDF Peering
The FHRP – Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) Peering
feature introduces BFD in the HSRP group member health monitoring system. Previously, HSRP group
member monitoring relied exclusively on HSRP multicast messages, which are relatively large and
consume CPU memory to produce and check. In architectures where a single interface hosts a large
number of groups, there is a need for a lighter protocol. BFD addresses this issue and offers sub-second
health monitoring at a relatively low CPU impact.
