To export the contents of a Smart Object
You can  export  the contents of a Smart Object fully  intact  to  any drive  or  directory  to  which you  have  access  permis
sions.
Select the Smart Object from the Layers palette, and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Export Contents. The Save
dialog box appears.
Navigate to where you want the Smart Object exported and click Save. The Smart Object is saved in PSB format
(for raster data) or PDF (for vector data).
To replace the contents of a Smart Object
Using the Replace Contents command lets you update one or multiple instances of a Smart Object at the same time.
Select the Smart Object, and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents.
Navigate to the file you want to use and click Place.
Click OK. The new content is placed in the Smart Object. Linked Smart Objects are also updated.

To convert a Smart Object back to a layer
Converting a Smart Object to a regular layer rasterizes the content at the current size.
❖
Select the Smart Object, and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert To Layer or Layer > Rasterize > Smart
Object.
The Smart Object is converted to a layer again, and the Smart Object thumbnail disappears. If you want to re-create
the Smart Object, reselect the layers and start from scratch. However, the new Smart Object won’t have the trans
forms you applied to the original one.
To create a new Smart Object from an existing Smart Object
You can copy a Smart Object along with its full contents. The new instance of the Smart Object can be linked or
unlinked to the original, depending on how you create the duplicate.
❖
In the Layers palette, select a Smart Object layer, and do one of the following:
To create a duplicate Smart Object that is linked to the original, choose Layer > New > Layer Via Copy. You can
also  drag the  Smart Object layer  to  the Create A New Layer  icon  at  the bottom of the  Layers  palette.  Any edits  you
make to the copy affect the original Smart Object and vice versa.
To create a duplicate Smart Object that is not linked to the original, choose Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart
Object Via Copy. Any edits you make to the copy do not affect the original Smart Object and vice versa.
A new Smart Object appears on the Layers palette with the same name as the original and “copy” as a suffix. You can
rename it.
