PRODUCT USE: All statements, technical information and recommendations contained in this document are based upon tests or experience that 3M believes
are reliable. However, many factors beyond 3M’s control can affect the use and performance of a 3M product in a particular application, including the
conditions under which the product is used and the time and environmental conditions in which the product is expected to perform. Since these factors are
uniquely within the user’s knowledge and control, it is essential that the user evaluate the 3M product to determine whether it is fit for a particular purpose
and suitable for the user’s method of application.

When you see the 3M™ Cubitron™ Abrasive Grain logo
on an abrasive product, you can know it means the best in
high performance abrasives known for their long-life, fast
cuts and quality fi nishes.
At 3M we know your applications require unique solu-
tions so we have made a family of Cubitron grains to
meet the diverse needs of our customers and optimize the
performance of their abrasive products.
When productivity matters, look for the Cubitron abra-
sive grain logo as your assurance of long-lasting,
top quality performance.

Microstructures maximize mineral performance
Tough. Hard. Self-sharpening.
Crystals Improve Wear Rates
Unlike conventional abrasives, such as aluminum oxide and alumina
zirconia, Cubitron grain has a crystalline structure that wears away
in smaller “chunks”. This leaves more mineral available to continue
working and increases the life of the product.
Cubitron Grain Takes the Heat
Platelets Improve Fracture Toughness and Create a
“Self-Sharpening” Mineral
A secondary phase microstructure in Cubitron grains 321 and 324
produces platelets which serve to reinforce the mineral to withstand
greater grinding forces. It also enables the grain to leave a jagged
irregular surface when it does fracture so the fresh cutting
surfaces remain sharp.
This sharper cutting surface contrasts sol gel mineral without platelets
— which leaves a relatively smooth surface that can result in a larger
contact area with the workpiece surfaces, creating increased frictional
drag, heat buildup, poor cut and potential workpiece damage.
The key to the performance of Cubitron Grain is its unique
microstructure which is a composite consisting of alpha-alumna
crystallites interspersed with a platelet secondary phase.
The microstructure and hardness of 3M Cubitron grain 321 remains
stable even when heated for 12 hours at 1300°C. This thermal stability
is critical to ensure the performance of Cubitron grain 321 is not altered
during subsequent manufacturing processes.
