1 Introduction
1.1 Brief
This product is a dedicated ISO14443A RFID transponder read/write device designed specifically for Bio-Rad Digital
Biology Group of Pleasanton California, USA for use in their medical specimen analysis instrument.

The board is fitted in up to 10 locations within the Bio-Rad analysis instrument. Its purpose is to read data from and
write data to a 30mm x 15mm PVC/PET encapsulated Ntag215 transponder tag which is located in alignment and
close proximity to the integral board antenna (between 0mm and 20mm separation distance).

close proximity to the integral board antenna (between 0mm and 20mm separation distance).
The board provides a digital communication interface to the host machine via a Molex 70553-0038 connector. This
interface conforms to the industry standard I¬2C communication protocol. (For detailed information on this protocol
see publications by NXP (Philips) Semiconductor, the originator of this standard.)

The Bio-Rad instrument requests of the product the actions of reading a transponder or writing to a transponder by
sending to it commands over the I2C serial bus. These commands are covered in detail later in this User Manual.
The board has fixed radio frequency output (RF) setup and can’t be altered in any way by user instruction from the
available commands. Therefore, unless the user wilfully alters the antenna circuitry of the board, it will perform in a
fixed manner, from an RF perspective, compatible with the board specimens provided for regulatory testing
approvals and certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC part 15C), Industry Canada (RSS210) and
the European Community regulations (CE). The board is not “user adjustable or configurable” for RF performance.

1.2 Fitting instructions
The board is rectangular as can be seen from the illustrations in this manual. In each corner of the boards is provided
a 3.4mm diameter hole, for the purpose of its mechanical fixing into place within the Bio-Rad instrument.

There is only one electrical connector on the board. This is the Molex 70553-0038 connector. The Bio-Rad
instrument must connect signals to it as follows viewed from the top (component side) with the connector
positioned in the bottom left hand corner of the board, reading from left to right:
instrument must connect signals to it as follows viewed from the top (component side) with the connector
positioned in the bottom left hand corner of the board, reading from left to right:
1.
SCL (I2C serial clock signal provided by the Bio-Rad instrument)
2.
0 volts (GND- regulated DC power supply connection, supplied by the Bio-Rad instrument).
3.
3.3 volts DC ±0.1V (Capable of sourcing at least 200mA, regulated DC power connection, supplied by the Bio-
Rad instrument).
4.
SDA (I2C serial data signal. Bi-Directional between the board and the Bio-Rad instrument).
