Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) caused by
exposure to vibration at work is preventable, but once
the damage is done it is permanent. The European
Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive 2002/44/EC has
been enforced since July 2006. Aimed at protecting
workers from health problems caused by hand-arm
vibration, it identifi es 2 key measurements:
The daily exposure action value (EAV) A(8)2.5,
standardised to an 8-hour working period, is 2.5m/s
2
The daily exposure limit value (ELV) A(8)s,
standardised to an 8-hour working period, is 5 m/s
2
Exposure limits are calculated as a combination of the
vibration level (magnitude) of the tool and the Daily
Exposure Time (Trigger Time). e.g. a product with 5m/s
2

vibration can be used up to 2 hours/day to reach the EAV
and up to 8 hours/day to reach the ELV.

In 2007,
D
E
WALT set itself the challenge of creating the most comprehensive system
of the safest, highest performing professional construction tools in the world. This is the
Perform & Protect system, made up of products that meet strict criteria in one or more
of the following core safety-focused areas:
Vibration; Control; Dust.
Bind-up situations can occur when drilling,
cutting, or grinding. These sudden torque
reactions, when the tool body rotates, can be
potentially hazardous and result in damage to
the tool or injury to the user.
With unique systems such as
CTC for rotary hammers
and E-clutch for drills and grinders,
D
E
WALT offers
several products in the
Perform & Protect system
that provide extra control in critical bind-up situations
compared to standard clutches and side handles.
RESPIRABLE DUST
(5 microns or less)
Can travel deep in to the
lungs to the Alveola.
Example: Clay dust.
Asbestos. Respirable
Crystalline Sylica (RCS).
THORATIC DUST
(10 microns or less)
Can travel in to upper
respiratory area.
Example: Cement dust.
INHALABLE DUST
(100 microns or less)
Can travel into mouth and nose.
Example: Fine sand.
Wood dust.
ACNE
DERMATITIS
SKIN CANCER
ASTHMA
COPD
SILICOSIS
ASBESTOSIS
CANCER
Dust inhalation may lead to serious long-term and life threatening diseases, such as asthma, silicosis, Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and cancer. The risk of developing these diseases will depend on the
type of dust you are exposed to, as well as the concentration and exposure time.
CONTROL
