The Edifier Extreme Connect has a very comprehensive feature list which includes a built-in microphone with
Bluetooth phone answering capabilities allowing hands-free calls, conference calls, and video chats, Bluetooth pairing
capability with A2DP and AVRCA profile support within a distance of 30ft (10m), Micro SD card, USB audio streaming
(MP3 and WMA files, 32GB max), 2 active neodymium drivers and 1 passive radiator for enhanced sonics, a built-in
1400mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 10 hours of play, a 3.5mm auxiliary input socket for versatile
connectivity to external devices, and a Soft Travel Case. The Extreme Connect charges its battery and can also
stream audio content via the supplied USB cable. A 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable is also supplied for the auxilliary input
allowing connections to CD players and other external devices. Rubber cladding, which is available in various colors,
is applied to the top and base panels of the enclosure, and provides an extra measure of protection from possible
bumps and scratches.
The specifications are quite impressive for the system, with an amplifier
power output of 2 x 2 watts RMS, a claimed frequency response of 190Hz
– 18kHz +/- 6dB, 2 x1.75” active drivers coupled to a 1.97” x 3.54” passive
radiator to extend bass response, and an input sensitivity of 500mV +/-
50mV. The Bluetooth connectivity has the following protocols V2.1+ EDR
allowing supported profiles: A2DP, AVRCP.
The listening team was more than impressed with the overall sonic
performance. Indeed, the sound is dynamic, punchy, and very well detailed
on various sources. Bass possesses a surprisingly fast and detailed pace,
combined with convincing midrange qualities. The high frequency detail is
surprisingly good for a full range driver, lending a pleasant sheen to cymbals and violins in particular. Also, levels of
overall coloration and listening fatigue for this system during all musical and vocal tests remained pleasantly low,
indicating solid construction with very good choices of enclosure and transducer materials having been made. The
Extreme Connect can be made to play quite loudly with 95dB peaks being reached at 0.5 meter nearfield, before
audible clipping started to creep in. Fit, finish, and durability for this test sample was considered to be excellent, so
much so in fact, that the product can withstand a moderate rain shower and a day at the beach with no ill effects. The
product is not considered waterproof however.
Bluetooth connections are secure and noise free. Also noted was an increase in connection distance exceeding the
advertised 30 foot to slightly over 40 feet. Microphone pickup angles gave an excellent performance during testing.
The following test data will illustrate how the LMS 4.6 and CLIOwin 7 measuring system analyzers assisted in
obtaining information to assess the Edifier Extreme Connect system’s improved performance.
