When you first plug in the VCR and turn it on,

In many areas, the Public Broadcasting Ser-
vice (PBS) station broadcasts a data signal
(EDS) with its regular broadcast. This signal
can automatically set your VCR’s clock to the
correct time. If a station in your area has EDS
signals, the VCR automatically sets the clock.
