10Gb Laser Optimised
Applications continue to grow faster and larger, consuming more bandwidth and placing greater demands on network infrastructure.
As the marketplace moves towards 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10Gb) and beyond, it becomes necessary to come up with bigger pipes to
carry traffic such as high definition video, voice-over-IP (VoIP), and web-based computing. Right now, the leading choice of media
for 10Gb applications is fibre optic patch cables. Fibre has proven its worth in a variety of infrastructure settings between buildings,
inside data centers, and in riser backbones. The benefits that fibre offers include long segment lengths, high bandwidth and immunity
to electromagnetic interference. Laser-optimised Multimode fibre (LOMMF) allows vendors to use a new technology in fibre transceivers,
the vertical cavity surface emitting laser, or VCSEL (pronounced “vixel”). The VCSEL operates at a shorter wavelength than standard
transceiver designs, such as distributed feedback (DFB) or Fabry-Perot (F-P) lasers and uses Multimode fibre instead of Single-Mode. Its
biggest benefit is that the manufacturing process allows many VCSELs to be built and tested while still on a single wafer, substantially
reducing the fabrication cost when compared to DFB or F-P lasers. The end result is a relatively low-cost transceiver capable of
supporting 10Gb links for premise and LAN applications, where copper UTP cord has traditionally been dominant.
