Check that the phone line is plugged into your computer.

Check that the phone line is working. You can check the line by plugging in an ordinary phone and 
listening for a dial tone.

Check that the phone number the program is dialing, is correct.

 2000 Professional: In the Phone and Modem Options dialog box (Control Panel / 

Phone and Modem Options), check that your modem is listed on the Modems tab, and that the 
location information is correct on the Dialing Rules tab.

 Millennium Edition: In the Modems Properties dialog box (Control Panel / Modems*), 

check that your modem is listed in the General tab, and that the location information is correct on the 
Dialing Properties tab.

* Windows

 Millennium Edition: If you do not see the Modems icon, proceed as follows:

In Control Panel click Tools and click Folder Options…

Select the View tab.

In the Advanced settings: dialog box, select the option Display all Control Panel options and all 
folder contents.

Click OK.

The modem dialing mode may be incompatible with your telephone line.
