Terminal Connection
Direct access through the Console port is often
preferred because it allows you to remain on the
system during system boots. A Macintosh or PC
attachment can use any terminal emulation program
for connecting to the Console port. A workstation
attachment under UNIX can use the emulator TIP. For
more details, see the documentation that is shipped
with your terminal emulation program.
Modem Connection
You can manage the Administration Console using a
modem by establishing a connection between your
current Console session and the Console port. When
you configure the external modem from the
Administration Console menu system, the Console
appears to be directly connected to the external
modem. See the SuperStack II 3900 and 9300
Administration Guide
 for more information.
Use the Console port for either a terminal connection
or a modem connection.
IP Management Interface
An IP management interface is the connection
between the Switch 3900 system and a subnetwork.
It allows you to manage the system through any of
the Ethernet ports.
With an IP interface, you can use the rlogin or telnet
commands to access the Administration Console
using TCP/IP from a host computer. You can also use
the IP interface to manage the system with an
external management application.
Initial Management Access
The first time that you access your system, you
connect through the Console port using a terminal.
These are the default settings for this port: 9600
baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, No parity.
When you first access the Administration Console
using the Console port, you see this prompt:
Select access level (read, write, administer):
1
At the prompt, enter:
administer
2
At the password prompt, press Return.
The Administration Console top-level menu appears:
Use this menu to change the Console port baud
setting for the terminal or to configure your system
for another management access mechanism.
