New Ultrium 2 models of the IBM
TotalStorage Ultrium External Tape
Drive have a capacity of up to 400GB
with compression (2:1) with the use of
the new IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium
200GB Data Cartridge. IBM Ultrium 2
Tape Drives can read and write first
generation LTO Ultrium Data
Cartridges at original capacities and
with improved performance. As your
needs grow, you can build on this
storage investment by moving to
higher capacity and performance
with automated libraries employing
the new IBM Ultrium 2 tape drive
technology.
With its higher capacity and tape
drive performance that more than
doubles up to 35MB/sec native data
transfer rate (70MB/sec with 2:1 com-
pression), the new IBM Ultrium
External Tape Drive 3580 is an excel-
lent alternative to DLT/SDLT; 1/4-inch,
4mm or 8mm tape drives.
Advanced features
The IBM TotalStorage Ultrium External
Tape Drive 3580 features Low Voltage
Differential (LVD) Ultra160 SCSI and
can attach to IBM and non-IBM
servers and workstations that support
these interfaces.
The IBM 3580 has an LCD display
and indicators for write protection,
tape in use, drive cleaning, and data
compression.
Software support
You can increase the power of the
IBM TotalStorage Ultrium External
Tape Drive by managing it with tape
management solutions such as
Tivoli® Storage Manager or other
third party storage software.
Why IBM LTO?
LTO is an open tape architecture
developed by a consortium of three
world-class storage producers.
IBM Ultrium drives share best-of-
breed technology with advanced
multi-track recording capabilities,
magneto-resistive (MR) head and
servo technologies, and high
recording densities. New Ultrium 2
drive enhancements include digital
speed matching, power manage-
ment, channel calibration and 512
data tracks. Error correction code
(ECC) function helps support data
integrity.
