Migrating Operating Systems Using Hard Drive Duplication
1
Summary
Deploying a new operating system, such as Windows 7* can be a time- and labor-intensive task,
especially when upgrading a large number of computers. This whitepaper includes a background on
disk cloning and how it can be used to simplify the process of deploying an OS to multiple PC’s. The
Kanguru Hard Drive Duplicator is ideal for this task due to its speed and ease-of-use. A step-by-step
guide to provisioning a new OS with the Kanguru HDD Duplicator is provided on page 3.

Disk Cloning Background
Disk cloning is the process of copying the contents of one hard drive to another hard drive. Cloning
is a powerful tool because it not only copies data files, but recreates the entire system configuration
including the operating system, device drivers and installed applications. The new hard drive is built
sector-by-sector from the source drive creating an exact copy of the original drive, instead of only
copying individual folders or files.
Disk Cloning can be used in a number of ways including:
• Full system backup & restore: Disk cloning is useful for creating a backup disk that can be used
in the event of a hard drive failure or other damaging event caused by malware, user error or
plain old wear and tear. Rather than backing up individual folders or files, a full system backup
can be created, which captures a last-known good state. After creating a full system backup
continue backing up your data regularily. In the event that your computer suffers unrecoverable
hard disk failure, the full system backup disk is simply swapped in for the faulty disk, your data is
recovered from the data backup file, and your computer is up and running again with minimal
down time.
• Upgrading hard drives: Users can often extend the life of their computer by upgrading to a
larger hard drive. Disk cloning can be used to make an exact copy of an existing smaller hard drive
onto a new larger drive. Using Resize functionality, the old hard drive image will be stretched to
fill the entire new drive without creating extra partitions.
• Provisioning new workstations: When provisioning new computers, disk cloning can be used
to create multiple hard drives based on the same master drive. This eliminates the need to install
the operating system, drivers and applications on each individual machine.
