Input Record events use tests to determine record selection or deletion and job
separation. In this context, a record is a single line and a job is the logical split in a
print file.
Each type of Input Record event has a specific function. The types of Input Record
events are:
Record Selection events
Record Deletion events
Job Separation events
Record Selection or Record Deletion events allow you to choose which records to
print or not to print in a job. A job should only use
either Record Select events or
Record Delete events, not both.
‘Record Select’ implies delete everything except those that match. ‘Record Delete’
implies print everything except those that match, therefore they logically contradict
each other!
Job Separation events tell the Designer how to separate jobs within a print file.
For example
Let us assume you are printing price lists. One of the price lists is for
abrasives, another is for adhesives.
You have created an environment for the price lists with the product
category at the top and individual items and their pricing listed line by line
below. Each line is a record. Some items in the list have been discontinued
(represented by the string ‘$DISCONT’ in the line/record).
You would use Record Selection or Record Deletion events to determine
whether the records for items that are discontinued are printed or not.
You would use a Job Separation event to define the separation of the two
price lists (abrasives and adhesives).
