Sun Enterprise 250 DNCS
Platform Announcement
Overview
Background
Cisco's support for the Sun Enterprise 250 Digital Network Control System (DNCS)
server ends with System Release (SR) 2.5/3.5/4.0 Service Pack 3. Beginning with SR
2.7/3.7/4.2 Service Pack 2, the Sun Fire V445 server replaces the Sun Enterprise 250
server. The Sun Enterprise 250 DNCS no longer supports the needs of system
operators who run SR 2.7/3.7/4.2—one of Cisco's latest versions of system software.
SR 2.7/3.7/4.2 was designed to use the Solaris 10 operating system (OS); earlier
system releases use the Solaris 8 OS. SR 2.7/3.7/4.2 implements 15 more multi-
threaded processes, 12 more Web UIs, and requires more system resources than did
earlier system releases.
The Sun Fire V445 server is designed to specifically take advantage of the additional
capabilities of the Solaris 10 OS. The Sun Fire V445 server is ideal for system
operators who serve fewer than 200,000 digital subscribers, and can be used for
testing purposes in headend laboratories. Support for the Sun Fire V445 server will
begin with SR 2.7/3.7/4.2 Service Pack 2, expected in September 2007.
Recommendation
Cisco recommends that system operators, who currently use the Sun Enterprise 250
server as their DNCS, upgrade to the Sun Fire V445 server, or better, before
installing SR 2.7/3.7/4.2. System operators should contact their Cisco Marketing
Manager for assistance in making this upgrade.
