Using an RS-232-to-IR Adapter Connection 

If the TV does not have an RS-232 port, which is typical for consumer grade TVs, 
an RS-232-to-IR adapter is required. Although this approach is strongly 
discouraged, you can use the JAFA SCIRTx RS-232 to IR adapter.

One disadvantage of using an RS-232-to-IR adapter (besides added complexity) is 
that you must use an adhesive to affix the IR sensor to the TV. There is a good 
chance that the adhesive, if exposed to weather or due to age, will pull away from 
the TV’s IR sensor. This results in loss of TV control and possibly the use of ladders 
and personnel to re-adhere the sensor to the TV.
