To play
The players sit facing each other with the  board  positioned so that each
player has a light-colored square in the right-hand comer.  To begin the game
the players toss a  coin for color, (white  always goes first)  then move in turn.
The moves for each piece are as foliows:
King:  One square in any direction (forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonal).

Queen: Any number of squares in a staight line.

Rook: Any number of squares  forwards, backwards, or sideways.

Bishop: Any number of squares diagonally (note: the bishop must always stay
                  on one color).
Knight: In combination of one square forwards then two squares sideways or
one square sideways then two squares forwards or backwards.
(note: The knight always moves to a square of the opposite color).
Pawn:  One square forward, with the option of two squares on its first move.
The pawn attacks one square diagonal from its position (note: When a
pawn reaches the end rank, it is promoted to a piece, other than a king
                 of the players choice).
A piece may only move in one direction on each move.  Only one piece may occu-
py a square, and only the knight may jump over another piece.  Only a pawn or
knight may move at the start of the game. When a king is attacked,it is "check."The
player whose king has been checked must get it out of check on his next move by cap-
turing the attacking piece, placing one of his pieces between the attackin, piece and
the king, or moving his king.  If he can't do this, the king is "checkmated"and the game
is over.
Chess is a board game for two people.
To play, you need the following:
A board divided in to 64 squares, 8 along
each side. The squares are altemately
colored light and dark.  A set of 32 chess
pieces: 2 rooks or castles, 2 knights, 2 bi-
shops, a king, a queen and 8 pawns per
     player.
The board should be set up as shown in the
diagram to the right.
The object of the game:
A player must capture (checkmate) his opponent's king.
