Xerox 871 Communications Module.  Provides a low–cost,
remote communication interface to Xerox printers.
abort
To prematurely terminate the printing of a job, execution of a
program, or execution of a nonprinting task.
algorithm
A step by step procedure for solving a problem.
alignment
Positioning of an image on a page for printing.
alphanumeric
Set of letters and whole numbers.
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange.  Standard
7–bit code that represents alphanumeric information.  Each
alphanumeric character and several nonprinting characters are
assigned a binary number covering 128 possible characters.  It is
used for information interchange among data processing
systems, data communication systems, and associated
equipment.  See also

application
Use to which a computer program or system is applied (for
example, sorting employee records).
application software
Host– or LPS–resident software that directs the computer to
perform specific tasks or functions.  Common business
applications include payroll, accounting, inventory, and so on.
argument
Independent variable of a function, such as a parameter.
ascender
Portion of the lowercase letter that extends above the main body
of the character (such as b, d, or h).
background job
Low–priority job, usually batched, which is executed
automatically, in the background, as system resources become
available.
band
Unit in a printed page that optimally handles image processing in
sequence.
batch
Body of data accumulated and grouped by kind before
processing.
batch processing
Process that allows repetitive operations to be performed
sequentially on batched data without much involvement from the
computer operator.
binary
Numbering system with a base of 2.  All numbers are
represented by combinations of 1 and 0.
