APPENDIX A -
MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
INSTALLATION OF SRS SYSTEMS ON BOARD A TRAIN
A.1 -
Introduction
This section deals with the installation requir ements for the use of a georadar
(GPR) sy stem on-board a train.
(GPR) sy stem on-board a train.
The sy stem consists of:
•
a notebook comp uter
•
a battery
•
a GPR control unit
•
a GPR multip lexer unit
•
up to 4 GPR antennas
•
an odometer
•
and relev ant connection cab les.
Items 1-4 will be mounted inside the locomotive and don’t need any sp ecific
installation; on the contrary , items 5 and 6 shall be mounted in the front of the
train and require some mechanical arran gements.
installation; on the contrary , items 5 and 6 shall be mounted in the front of the
train and require some mechanical arran gements.
For p ractical reasons (mainly logistical), some of the devices needed to assure the
p rop er mounting of the sy stem should be p rovided by SNCF; basically , these
consist of a metallic frame used to house the antennas and the brackets for fixin g
this frame to the front of the locomotive.

Mechanical requirements
M echanical installation of the antennas and the odometer requir es brackets to be
fixed to the buffers of the train. Therefore, it is imp ortant that the train used for the
test has buffers.

M oreover, it is also imp ortant that there are no obstacles between the buffers as
measurements would be affected by them (see
