Key Benefits
Flexibility
The 3Com
®
Router 5640 and
Router 5680, modular rackmount
units, come equipped with four
or eight Multi-function Interface
Modules (MIM) slots for LAN or
WAN interface modules that allow
the network to be adapted for
immediate and future business needs.
These routers are key components
of 3Com's range of high-value,
customer-focused data and voice
solutions—used by enterprises
worldwide—which provide competitive
and complete network operation,
management, and maintenance.
Multi-Service
High-speed processors efficiently
address remote connectivity, routing,
and security needs. Multiple WAN
interface options include ISDN,
Fractional T1/E1, T3/E3, synchronous
and asynchronous serial, and
Ethernet—for cable or DSL. Powerful
standards-based routing features—
TCP/IP routing with RIP v1 and v2,
OSPF and BGP-4—allow seamless
operation with your present network.
A variety of WAN protocols—Frame
Relay, X.25, HDLC, PPP, ISDN, leased
line, as well as several dial-up and
bandwidth-on-demand routing
and networking protocols—help
maximize network performance.
Interoperable
3Com WAN routers are “Tolly Verified
for Interoperability with Cisco*”.
This reduces your implementation
and testing time, as the question of
multi-vendor interoperability has
been removed.
Advanced Security and Control
The latest security and control fea-
tures—AAA, RADIUS authentication,
firewall, advanced filtering, and
VPN (Virtual Private Network)—
and protocols, such as IPSec with
IKE, GRE and L2TP, help secure and
protect sensitive client and company
information against unauthorized
access—whether across the company
Intranet or on the Internet. In addition,
in a public network, the routers can
be used as an L2TP access concentrator
(LAC) or an L2TP terminator (LNS).
Legacy Voice and Data Integration
Advanced Quality of Services (QoS),
congestion and traffic management
capabilities—support for IP telephony
and Voice over IP—let any existing
wide area network efficiently handle
the demands of converged voice, data,
and video.
Memory and Software Features
The Router 5640 and 5680 come
with maximum operatory memory,
and complete routing and security
features and applications set as
standard—unlike many competitive
products. This eliminates hidden
upgrade costs and so enhances return
on investment (ROI).
Management
Management of these routers can be
accomplished with 3Com Network
Supervisor, 3Com Router Manager
CLI (Command Line Interface),  and
other management applications.
