Enhanced eBook authoring in InDesign CS5.5
As eBook reading devices grow ever more sophisticated, InDesign lets designers keep pace. Create
visually compelling eBooks that take advantage of advanced capabilities in devices such as the
Apple iPad, Sony Reader, and Barnes & Noble nook.*
•  Transform the eBook reading experience with compelling video and audio—whether it’s a
soundtrack in a children’s book, a virtual-walkthrough video in a travel guide, or contemporary
news footage in a history book. In InDesign CS5.5, add video and audio for eBook reader
applications that support HTML5 video and audio tags.
•  Deliver eBooks with images that resize automatically to look crisp on a wide variety of screens.
Set conversion options for the entire document or individual images when you export to EPUB
format. You can also rasterize InDesign shapes, text frames, placed graphics, and groups created
in InDesign so that they export as dynamically resizing images.
•  Save time and improve consistency by using styles to automate text formatting. Now you can
map paragraph and character styles directly to HTML, EPUB, and PDF tags to help ensure that
styles you define in InDesign are correctly exported to the appropriate specifications. Drop caps,
bulleted and numbered lists, and tables are handled automatically, and other text formatting
appears as desired in exported documents. For more advanced workflows, you can add CSS class
names and enter your own tags.
In InDesign, you can map styles to HTML,
EPUB, or PDF tags in the Export Tagging
pane of the Paragraph Style Options and
Character Style Options dialog boxes.
Though the tags don't affect the appearance
of the layout in InDesign (below right, in
color), they're mapped to the correct
specifications when you export HTML,
EPUB, or PDF documents for display in
Adobe Digital Editions (below right, in black
and white).
To make images resize automatically
to fit difference device screens, use the
Object Export Options dialog box in
InDesign. Select Custom Conversion,
and then choose Relative To Page
Width from the Size menu. (If you
don’t want the image to resize, choose
Fixed from the Size menu instead.) The
image size automatically adjusts to the
page width in different layouts (right),
displayed here on two different
devices in Adobe Digital Editions—
digital reading software from Adobe.
