Extensis Font Reserve Server:
Font management for workgroups
Creative communities face many problems managing fonts in
their workflows. The design, print and publishing industries
all face the challenges of using the right font at the right time,
maintaining font license compliance, and controlling the
introduction of rogue fonts into a professional environment.
Font Reserve Server is a centralized font repository that helps
solve these problems, allowing users and administrators to
breathe easier.
The Problem
Every systems administrator in a publishing environment is
well aware of the workflow, technical, and legal challenges
involved in managing fonts for workgroups.
Take a look at an advertising agency: Each graphic designer
might have anywhere from hundreds to thousands of fonts
on their own machine and each production person needs
access to all the fonts used in all the jobs. As a document
moves through the editorial, design, and production phases,
it’s imperative that the appropriate fonts are used every step
along the way. If one client’s job uses Helvetica Neue by Agfa-
Monotype and another uses Helvetica Neue by Linotype, it’s
essential that the fonts aren’t confused. As soon as any user
notices different fonts in use—whether because line breaks
differ, fonts are substituted, or text is cut off—work on the
document stops until the source of the problem is found. And
finding the source of the problem may involve reviewing fonts
on machines throughout the company, which may take hours.
