The EarPhone-12 is our first earphone ever! Obviously, as you could expect from XTZ, we 

went for something new. The idea behind this project was not only to create a good earphone, 

maybe with an excellent price/quality ratio, but to build something revolutionary, something 

that expresses our passion for music and technology.

The idea came up during testing of the first prototypes of our equally revolutionary MH-

800 DSP system. The combination of top-quality audio components and Dirac’s latest DSP 

software simply lead to stunning results!

The increase of sound quality, optimizing the system with the software, even if in this case 

in near-field conditions, was simply surprising! Probably this was the reason we immediately 

thought about earphones, based on the experiences with the MH-800 DSP system.

It had never been in our minds before to develop earphones, but when we heard that incredible 

improvement we knew we had to!

We have to admit that developing earphones can be quite tricky, as they are really small! This 

is one of the reasons it took some time to get the perfect sound! It was a cost-intensive project, 

but the combination of this highly optimized hardware and the extremely sophisticated DIRAC 

DSP software works as well as we expected!

Basically the EarPhone-12 work as any other “classic” earphone: just connect them to any 

source, they’ll do their job!

A lot of effort was put in the acoustical development of these “micro-speakers”! Studying the 

frequency response of our earphones in a “dummy head”, measuring again and again with 

the most precise equipment available, we slowly got closer to the goal of the “perfect sound”. 

Nevertheless, as we are all human beings, in the end it was only the constant comparison of 

what was measured, and what was “experienced” by our ear, that lead us to the final result! 

We found out that the “perfect sound” of an earphone has to follow slightly “different rules” 

than a speaker system.

Applying finally the Dirac DSP sound optimization, the resulting, impressively balanced and 

flawless sound can be described only as stunning, breathtaking, not least due to the perfect 

correction in the time domain. We claim this is one of the best earphones at any price.

We thought for quite a while about adopting something similar to the Room-Tuning options 

of our speakers also to the new earphones! This might seem ridiculous (as there´s no room 

at all..) but this is not the whole truth. Ordering our EarPhone-12 you’ll notice they come with 

three different sizes of rubber cushions! Try it out, and you’ll see (hear) that the bass-character 

changes sensibly due to the different cushions, the bigger the cushions the more bass you 

get! Use the smaller cushions for a more neutral sound, the bigger ones in case more bass 

is desired.

We also paid a lot of attention to efficiently reduce influence of background noise. We obtained 

a very high attenuation of the noise floor, caused by rumors in the listening ambience, which 

contributes to a much cleaner and dynamic sound.

Also wearing comfort has a high relevance, when it comes to earphones. To avoid damaging 

the cable we decided for a strip-shape cable, which benefits from a kind of “built-in” stiffness. 

We also thought about a classical problem: You’re listening to your favorite song, phone rings, 

you have to stop listening. Instead of being forced to keep the earphone in your hand during 

the “break”, just use them as a kind of “necklace”! The XTZ EarPhone-12 come with built-in 

magnets on their backside, this way, when you have to interrupt listening, you can just “put 

them together”, and wear them around your neck. Also the classical cable tangle is avoided 

successfully this way!
