6. Assembly of the Set
a. How to prepare the reversible fuel cell for electrolysis

Step 1:

Place the reversible fuel cell (c) so that the side with the black input jack is facing you.
Step 2:

Using scissors (not provided) take the rubber hose (H) and carefully cut off two 2cm lengths. Put the
rest of the rubber tubing to the side as this is spare tubing.
Step 3:

Step 4:

Step 5:

Now take the Hydrogen tank (D), Oxygen tank (E) and gas contains (F) out of their bag and place them
on a flat surface. Check that the 16cm lengths of rubber hose are securely attached to the gas contain-
ers (F).
5. Using the 0.3W reversible fuel cell
The reversible fuel cell is very unique because it is both an electrolyzer and a fuel cell combined into
one device. When applying an electrical current, the device acts as an electrolyzer that produces
hydrogen and oxygen from de-ionized water. When applying a load, the electrolyzer becomes a fuel
cell and generates electricity from hydrogen. It is perfect for school science labs, classroom use or
demonstration purposes. Its electrolyzer function can also use power produced from small solar cells,
wind turbines, or mechanical hand cranks.

Take one of these newly cut 2cm lengths rubber hose and place a black
hose pin (I) into one end of the rubber hose. Attach the other end of this
2cm section of rubber hose to the top left nozzle on the black banana
socket side of the reversible fuel cell.

1.7V ~ 2V (D.C) (do not go over 2.5V as this could permanently damage the revers-
ible fuel cell)
Take the other newly cut 2cm length of rubber hose and place a red hose
pin (I) into one end of the rubber hose. Attach the other end of this 2cm
section of rubber hosing to the top left nozzle on the red banana socket
side of the reversible fuel cell (C).
