Initially, Serial ATA (SATA) was designed
as an internal, or inside-the-box, interface
technology, bringing improved perfor-
mance and new features for disk and tape
drives inside the PC system. Now, the same
performance and features are available for
storage needs outside the PC, without
relying on USB or 1394 connectivity.
Called external SATA or eSATA, this tech-
nology allows customers to utilise shielded
cable lengths up to two metres outside the
PC to take advantage of the benefits the
SATA interface brings to storage. eSATA
provides up to five times more performance
than existing solutions and supports hot-
plug devices as well.

Adaptec RAID 1225SA performance

When installed into the fast PCIe bus, this
controller ensures maximum data through-
put of 3Gb/s per port. In addition, the
latest external SATA (eSATA) connector also
provides more secure cable connection,
improved durability, increased EMI pro-
tection and up to two metres cable length.
Throughput up to 200Mb/s of sustained
data transfer can be achieved using stan-
dard 7,000 RPM SATA hard drives by
setting up two drives in a RAID 0 configu-
ration. Applications ideal for the Adaptec
1225SA include external direct attached
storage for professional workstations and
entry servers.
