IRIS General
IRIS is a series of products developed for monitoring and controlling other
systems. IRIS units work usually in networks communicating with each other via
radio, on the 433 MHz band. An IRIS network can consist of units of different
types and usually there are at least one unit with an interface that enables it to
communicate with the end-user. It could for example be a serial port, a GSM/
GPRS module or an Internet connection and a database.
There are IRIS models made for integration on other circuit boards and IRIS
models mounted in a separate housing.
All IRIS units are confi gurable. The easiest way to confi gure an IRIS unit is to
use the confi guration program available on the IRIS website. There are various
parameters that are confi gurable such as the settings for the serial port, analogue
input limits and predefi ned text strings. The parameters available depend on
the type of the IRIS unit. Each unit has some logical functions such as timers,
counters and fl ags. To save power for those units that’s powered with battery
there is a sleep function. This function can be used to minimize the current
consumption when the unit is idle.
IRIS Networks
An IRIS network is often built in a tree-structure. At the top there is central unit
that acts as the connection to the end-user or an external system for example a
PLC or a computer network. The central unit can have an Internet connection,
a GSM/GPRS module, a serial interface or just some inputs and outputs. Units
lower in the tree-structure are normally used to supervise and monitor machines
and sensors. Every unit can have it’s own lower units further down in the tree-
structure.
IRIS units can be used for cable-replacement. Units work in pairs exchanging
serial data and I/O data when the distance is to long for cables or if there are
other diffi culties with the installing cables.
The simplest IRIS solution is when an IRIS unit works alone supervising a
machine.
