BENDIX SPICER FOUNDATION BRAKE LLC ENCOURAGES SAFE
DE-POWER AND DISPOSAL PROCESS FOR SPRING BRAKES

The power spring contained within the emergency section of a spring brake can hold up to 2,800 pounds of
force; and if the emergency section clamp band of a double clamp style spring brake is removed, the power
spring could uncoil and escape, releasing its force and causing serious personal injury or even death.  The
sheer force released can result in severe bodily injury, or even loss of life.

In the interest of service technician safety, Bendix does not recommend servicing the emergency section on a
double-clamp spring brake.

Bendix further advises that the power spring on any spring brake should be safely de-powered before the
disposal of any spring brake chamber. This procedure is to ensure that everyone involved with the disposal of a
spring brake is free from the hazards associated with the power spring.

Finally, Bendix also strongly recommends the power spring is properly caged with the use of a steel container
specifically designed for this purpose, in order to safely dispose of the unit. One industry-recognized supplier of
this type of equipment is listed below.  Note: It is the sole responsibility of the user to ensure the container and
procedure meets all of the requirements for safe spring brake disposal.
