Hardware Overview
This chapter describes the front panel and rear panel of the Switch and shows you 
how to make the hardware connections. 
3.1  Front Panel 
The following figure shows the front panel of the Switch. The front panel contains 
the Switch LEDs, 12 dual personality interfaces each consisting of a mini-GBIC 
(Gigabit Interface Converter) slot and an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port, one 
console and one management port for local management, and a slot for alarm 
management.

Interfaces 
Each interface has one 1000BASE-T RJ-45 port and one Small Form-Factor 
Pluggable (SFP) slot (also called a mini-GBIC slot), with one port or 
transceiver active at a time. 
• 12 100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet Ports:
Connect these ports to high-bandwidth backbone network Ethernet 
switches using 1000BASE-T compatible Category 5/5e/6 copper cables.
• 12 Mini-GBIC Slots:
Use mini-GBIC transceivers in these slots for connections to backbone 
Ethernet switches.
Console Port
The console port is for local configuration of the Switch.
