 Automatic Sprinkler System Basics
The three main operating components of every auto-
matic sprinkler system are the timercontrol valves and
sprinklers /drip emitters
The timer is the brain of the system, signaling the control
valves when to start and stop the flow of water to the
sprinklers. The sprinklers and/or drip emitters apply the
water.
Each valve controls a group of sprinklers called a water-
ing zone. The watering zones should be planned and
installed according to the type of plant material being
watered, the sun/shade conditions, the amount of water
delivered by the sprinkler/emitter and the available water
flow and pressure.
The timer controls automatic operation based on a water-
ing schedule that you set. The watering schedule deter-
mines when and how long each zone will be watered. The
ECXTRA provides three independent watering programs
(called AB and C). Each program can have it’s own
watering schedule. This feature enables each zone to fol-
low three different watering schedules. It is important to
remember that you only need to use one program to oper-
ate the timer. The two remaining programs are there if you
need them.
When an automatic program starts, the valves operate
one at a time in numeric order. In other words, one zone
would water completely before another zone would turn
on. This is called a watering cycle.
