, CiscoWorks VMS combines Web-based tools for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting:

CiscoWorks VMS addresses the needs of both small- and large-scale VPN and security deployments by protecting productivity gains and 

reducing operating costs for organizations. Features are listed in Table 1. 

CiscoWorks VMS 2.3 Features 

Firewall management 

Supports centralized and scalable management of Cisco firewalls 

Auto update server for 
firewall management 

Allows Cisco firewalls to periodically and automatically contact the update server for any security 
configuration, Cisco PIX

 Firewall Operating System, and Cisco PIX Device Manager updates 

Network-based IPS and 
router-based IPS 
management 

Allows configuration of network IPSs and router-based IPSs; many sensors can be quickly configured using 
group profiles; additionally, a powerful signature management feature is included to increase the accuracy 
and specificity of detection 

Cisco Security Agent 
management 

Manages and protects Cisco Security Agents of server and desktop endpoints, allowing management 
scalability to thousands of agents, thereby supporting large enterprise deployments 

VPN router management 

Includes functions for the setup and maintenance of large deployments of VPN connections and provides 
users with a point-and-click interface for setting up and deploying connections 

Security monitoring 

Provides integrated monitoring to minimize the number of security-monitoring consoles required 

Monitoring for performance 

Provides functions for improved monitoring and troubleshooting of the performance of services that contribute 
to enterprise network security 

Operational management 

Provides the operational management for the network, allowing network managers to quickly build a complete 
network inventory and monitor and report on hardware, software, configuration, and inventory changes 

The management functions for firewalls, network IPSs, Cisco Security Agents, VPNs, security monitoring, and performance monitoring have 

all been updated with new features and usability improvements such as streamlined installation. Furthermore, management support for router-

based IPS signatures has been added to further extend security to the network infrastructure.
