1. Make sure that the User-Interface Card to which your console is attached is in fact a UICD rather than a
UUIC.
2. Try getting the Command-Line-Entry Window to appear (see Section 9.2.4); if you can, make sure that you
don’t have menu activation turned OFF (see Section 9.2.3.B).
3. If your monitor is not a multisync type, and if you haven’t already done so, enable the UICD’s non-
multisync-monitor support (see Section 9.5).

Some RS/6000 computers have difficulty if they’re connected to their keyboards through a ServSwitch Multi
system. Temporarily uninstall the CPU-Interface Card that the RS/6000 is attached to. Find the jumper on the
Card labeled “S5”; set this jumper to ON and reinstall the Card. If this doesn’t help, take the actions
recommended in the next section.

1. Send the Command-Mode hotkey sequence (see Section 8.2.1) to the ServSwitch Multi from the keyboard.
If this sends the Switch into Command Mode (the LED for your current channel should blink), at least the
keyboard and Switch are communicating, so the problem is likely on the computer side; skip to step 5. If
the Switch won’t go into command mode, go on to step 2.
2. Make sure that the keyboard is completely and securely plugged into the User Cable, and that the User
Cable is completely and securely plugged into the ServSwitch Multi. (If your User Cable is a PS/2 type,
make sure that the keyboard and mouse strands haven’t been connected backwards at either end; the
PS/2 mouse strand is marked with a yellow band.)
3. If you have multiple keyboards attached to your local console or your secondary console’s User-Interface
Card, the ServSwitch Multi doesn’t support this; you’ll have to remove all but one of the keyboards.
4. Is Scroll Lock ON or OFF? This will determine which of two characters is sent to the selected computer
when certain keys are pressed; see Section 8.4.
5. Make sure the selected computer is plugged in, turned ON, and receiving adequate power.
