How to Use the WC Utility   272 

-c

: Enable counting for characters. 

If no files are given, standard input is read for characters. 

wc file1

 counts the lines, words, and characters in file1. 

wc -w -c

 counts the words and characters from the standard input. 

-?: Display program description. 

Note: If the environment variable WC exists, its value is used to establish default 
options.
