Partial Sequence Number PDU’s serve multiple functions. When an IS-IS router
receives an LSP, the receiving router will issue a PSNP as acknowledgement. Partial
Sequence Number PDU’s also aid in maintaining Link State Database
synchronization by multicasting a PSNP with a list of missing or old LSPs..
A Complete Sequence Number PDU is issued upon startup of the IS-IS service.
These messages are flooded to neighboring IS-IS peers with the current state of
the local Link State Database. Each router performs this task in order to provide a
synchronized Link State Database within the routing doman. Any subsequent
changes to the database result in a PSNP being transmitted. On a broadcast
network, CSNP is periodically transmitted by DIS (the default transmission period is
10 seconds). On a point-to-point line, CSNP is only transmitted when a
neighboring relationship is initially created.
