Note: The terms "Unidirectional Path Switched Ring" and "UPSR" may appear in Cisco literature. 
These terms do not refer to using Cisco ONS 15xxx products in a unidirectional path switched 
ring configuration. Rather, these terms, as well as "Path Protected Mesh Network" and "PPMN," 
refer generally to Cisco's path protection feature, which may be used in any topological network 
configuration. Cisco does not recommend using its path protection feature in any particular 
topological network configuration. 
 

 
This chapter provides examples of common ONS 15454 network applications and shelf 
configurations.  All SONET examples are shown as either ring or 1+1 protected.  All DS-1 and 
DS-3 examples are shown either as 1:N (N<5) protected.  DS3XM (transmux) and EC1 traffic is 
shown as 1:1 protected.  Ethernet cards are shown unprotected. 
 
The examples shown in this chapter are designed to provide general guidance for developing 
node configurations to meet your service needs.
