New Brunswick faces challenges of 2009 with 
optimism and efficient information systems
The Government of New Brunswick (GNB) information 
technology systems serve a wide variety of public 
functions across the province. One of Canada’s 
four original provinces, New Brunswick is the 
largest in area among the Maritimes, and the only 
constitutionally bilingual province.
For several years, GNB has had a goal to achieve 
self-sufficiency and eliminate central Canadian 
government subsidies. Despite the 2009 global 
recession, this target remains in place. Lieutenant-
Governor Herménégilde Chiasson opened the last 
legislative session by saying, “Difficult decisions will 
be required going forward to keep expenditures 
under control and to focus on results that support
