and high availability. It reduces IT costs and complexity and saves time, space, 
and costs compared to traditionally architected storage.
The XP is connected to the mainframe to supply business-critical, reliable 
storage, and the lower-cost EVA is connected to the Open Systems hardware. 
Deployment went extremely smoothly. It took only two days to migrate all the 
mainframe data from the Shark E20 to the new HP storage system. 
“The HP storage solution made it extremely easy to migrate the data from 
the old system to the new one,” says Bob collumbien, NIHDI Infrastructure & 
Operations Manager. “Because of the systems’ ease of use, we had to do very 
little work, and within two days we had all the data transferred over.”

NIHDI Improves Flexibility and Gains a Highly Reliable Storage Solution
As a result of the new HP storage infrastructure, NIHDI has a more flexible, 
scalable storage solution that is highly reliable, less expensive to support, and 
easier to manage than the previous solution. The combination of the EVA and 
the XP Disk Array allows NIHDI to support high-performance storage for main-
frame and Open Systems applications and hardware.
The combination of the EVA and XP Disk Array makes overall storage manage-
ment much simpler than it had been previously with the Shark E20. The Shark 
E20 had to serve both the Open Systems and mainframe simultaneously, and 
was inflexible when handling storage for the Open Systems. Storage could 
not be easily allocated or reconfigured; volumes could not be easily extended, 
moved, or deleted. The EVA offers far greater flexibility for the Open Systems
