Reduces Maintenance Time, Meets Legislative Mandate
SUREFIRE DEPENDABILITY
Helps Prevent Out-of-Service Orders
Out-of-adjustment air brakes cause 37 percent of Department
of Transportation (DOT) out-of-service orders, which add up to
fines, and perhaps more importantly downtime. To address this
problem, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 mandates
that OEMs install automatic brake adjusters and brake
adjustment indicators on all commercial air brake systems
manufactured after 10/20/94. While automatic adjusters have
helped rectify the problem, most indicator methods to date
are either time consuming or unreliable.
That’s why Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake offers the Bendix
®
SureStroke
indicator, a visual diagnostic tool that helps
drivers and maintenance personnel quickly and accurately
assess brake adjustment. Not only does the SureStroke
indicator meet the federal mandate, it also significantly
reduces the time and cost associated with pre-trip inspections.
Eliminate The Guesswork
The Bendix
®
SureStroke
indicator is a metal bracketing
system that bolts onto the brake chamber using the existing
stud and nut. The indicator relies on a clevis pointer that is
aligned with the first of two goal posts. If the pointer stays
between the two goal posts when the air brakes are applied at
85 psi or more, the brakes are in adjustment. If the pointer
exceeds the second post, the brakes are out of adjustment.
The distance the pointer travels represents the brake stroke
travel length. The goal posts signify the appropriate DOT
overstroke limit once properly adjusted. With the SureStroke
indicator, drivers no longer have to measure stroke travel.
Instead, drivers simply check the indicator to see if the brakes
are in or out of adjustment.
Improved Accuracy
The SureStroke
indicator can eliminate needless brake adjust-
ments, remove error associated with guesswork and reduce
shop time to diagnose certain air-brake-related faults.
No longer will drivers need to chalk push rods or estimate
stroke travel by eye.
In addition to assessing brake adjustment, the SureStroke
indicator can help diagnose weak or broken spring brakes,
problems with foundation brake parts, restricted air lines,
clogged valves and leaking diaphragms.
