More on Photography
In
(auto) and scene modes, the camera automati-
cally adjusts shutter speed and aperture to produce op-
timal exposure.  In PSA, and M modes, shutter speed
and aperture can be adjusted to suit the user’s creative
intent.  PSA, and M modes also give the user control
over sensitivity (ISO equivalency;
 51), white balance
(
 53), manual focus (
56), and the options in the
shooting menu (
 85).

How it works
When to use it
P
Programmed
auto
Camera sets shutter speed and ap-
erture for optimal exposure.  Flex-
ible program can be used to select
additional combinations of shutter
speed and aperture that will pro-
duce the same exposure.
Recommended for most situations.
S
Shutter-
priority auto
User chooses shutter speed: cam-
era sets aperture for best results.
High shutter speeds freeze motion.
Low shutter speeds suggest move-
ment by blurring moving objects.
A
Aperture-
priority auto
User chooses aperture: camera sets
shutter speed for best results.
Large apertures (small f/-numbers)
soften background details and let
more light into camera, increasing
range of fl ash.  Small apertures
(large f/-numbers) increase depth
of fi eld, bringing main subject and
background into focus.
M
Manual
User controls both shutter speed
and aperture.
Use for complete control over ex-
posure.
