Chapter 1  Introduction

Functional Description
1-7
MBE10-8 Operation
On power-up, both the local and remote MBE10-8s will connect to their
respective LANs. The remote MBE10-8 continuously learns the addresses of
workstations on the remote LAN and updates the local MBE10-8 with these
addresses (up to 80 addresses).
The remote MBE10-8 forwards all frames to the local LAN that are not addressed
to workstations on the remote LAN. The local MBE10-8 forwards all frames that
have destination addresses belonging to one of the remote workstations to the link.
Broadcast and multicast packets are always forwarded in both directions, unless
they are masked out using the filtering tool (see the
LAN RANger Series
Configuration Guide
).
MBE10-8D Operation
Operational characteristics of MBE10-8D are identical, in most respects, to those
of MBE10-8, except that MBE10-8D (located at the local LAN) supports
connection of two remote LANs (one per link).
MBE10-8D supports up to 80 addresses per LAN providing a total of 160.
Broadcast and multicast packets are always forwarded in both directions, unless
masked out using the filtering tool (see the
LAN RANger Series Configuration
Guide
). MBE10-8D can also be installed on a remote LAN where one link serves as
a backup link to the other.
