frog helped Maxtor examine the entire consumer
life cycle, keeping in mind not just functionality but
the core reasons a user might purchase this kind of
storage device—it’s not just about storing data, but
preserving memories, the digital archives that are
significant to users’ lives. frog identified ways to
reinvigorate the existing product line along multiple
consumer touchpoints, creating a consistent design
language that resonates with the consumer, from
the packaging, to the look and feel of the OneTouch III,
all the way to the user interface for the software that
controls it.
Maxtor and frog not only
wanted to carry forward
the strong and
rugged look of the
Maxtor OneTouch family
but humanize it a bit
more. In comes the new
Maxtor OneTouch III
solution.
The sides and edges of the Maxtor OneTouch III solu-
tion are encased in a soft, tinted rubber, and the shape
of the enclosure is reformed to resemble a capital I,
which evokes the feeling of a steel girder. The
traditional blue LED-lit Maxtor OneTouch button now
glows and blinks with white LEDs. White LEDs are
rare in the computing world and serve not only
to differentiate the Maxtor OneTouch III from
competitors but also to further soften the drive’s
overall appearance. When standing upright, the Maxtor
OneTouch III solution is wider than its predecessor,
which allows Maxtor to dispense with the plastic stand
from previous models, which some users complained
of losing after using the drive on its side.
In computing, the design direction seems always to go
from large to small. The Maxtor OneTouch III goes out
on a limb by bucking this trend, but this isn’t just to
be contrary. Although the new solution is a bit larger,
the rubberized exterior actually makes the Maxtor
OneTouch III solution easier to grip, reducing the risk
of accidental drops. The same goes for slippage across
desktops and counters as the rubber resists lateral
movement. Better yet, the Maxtor OneTouch III
solution is stackable for users who want to employ
several drives without increasing their physical
storage footprint. And not least of all, as any outdoors
enthusiast will testify, rubberized exteriors resist
accidental damage and help protect internal
components while dampening vibration.
The new enclosure on the single-drive Maxtor
OneTouch III solution also helps promote a unified
product family appearance and easily expands with
the wider, two-drive Maxtor OneTouch III, Turbo Edition
line. The double-disk Turbo Edition is the industry’s
first external consumer drive to offer either the
performance boost of a striped RAID 0 array or
the extra data integrity of mirrored RAID 1. Imagine
if, heaven forbid, your building caught fire, and you
grabbed your mission critical Maxtor OneTouch III
backup solution on the way out the door. In the running
and mayhem to follow, the odds of keeping your data
perfectly intact increase if your files are replicated
across two drives (RAID 1) within the Maxtor solution
rather than just one.
As a leader in providing elegant, intuitive solutions,
the new Maxtor OneTouch III chassis is about more
than aesthetics. It’s about providing our customers
with a sturdy design that will last. The exterior shell,
fashioned from a durable, lightweight plastic compos-
ite to help keep weight minimized, features long air
slits near the corners to promote ventilation, which is
critical for the health of a storage solution. Under this,
a sturdy metal shell offers venting on every side, and
